I am doing a project on how Sesame Street affects children's learning processes. Does anyone have any information on the tools they use or how they help children learn?

Thanks :)

  1. Repetition is one of the most important tools in helping children learn...that's one thing that sesame street uses a lot. Repetition.  Also, making the material fun to learn is also a huge plus...because we all know that unless it's interesting, we're more likely to drift off and not pay attention to what is being taught.

  2. I am 33 now and I remember that Sesame Street helped me to learn my numbers, letters, and some spanish!  It's great!

  3. The most obvious method they use to teach children is simple repetition.  Think about it, every day there is a number of the day and letter of the day.  In the period of time that Sesame Street is on tv, those two things show up over and over and over again, in different forms.  They'll show the upper and lower case of the letter, talk about words that start with the letter, have a character associated with that letter (remember "C is for Cookie, that's good enough for me!"?), and just show it on the screen and say the letter several times.  I'm not positive, but I think they even have a Spanish word of the day that starts with the letter.

Same thing goes for the number of the day.  The Count counts to the number of the day.  They have little cartoon-y songs that have to do with the number of the day (like "Ladybug Picnic").

By the end of the show, the kid has had a single number and letter drilled into their head, and that's a pretty effective way to teach a young child something.

  4. ..... i don't know

  5. sesame street has now been totally taken over by the disney channel.I live in ireland and I have english tv,disney have totally ruined it and now its called play with me sesame!

  6. I have a picture of my son standing near the tv watching Seasame Sreet. And from the pic you can see a hidden word on the screen. Crazy I know but its true.      Anyway regarding learning tools, I know of a great website for kids.  try : www.aolatschool.com

  7. It teaches them reading, writing, about other cultures and social skills.

  8. the characters are colourful, their voices are happy, repetition, songs and the mix of cartoons to puppets keeps kids (and adults) entertained as you can see the scene changes to maintain the attention too, yet not overstimulating. My son was 10 months old saying Elmo, cookie monster and big bird. I am happy it is making a come back- i nearly own all of the DVDs now- my son is near 2 and still wants sesame street every day- he now does the dances, i also still remember the songs from when i was a kid.

  9. I would just watch a few episodes and it will be pretty obvious.

  10. Well i used to work at a Daycare [[for about 2 years]] and we used Sesame Street as a teaching tool alot.

The characters seem to catch their attention and basically things are so repetitive. Count Dracula...you guessed it counts in every episode...ha ha things like that.

It also gives the children a feeling of interaction because many times the characters will ask the child a question and then pause for the kids to answer...

Like the other girl said...wake up one morning and watch a couple episodes...its pretty obvious. >_<

  11. Sesame Street uses stimuli and repetition to teach children letters, sounds, words, and text.

  12. i beleave it helps by interaction and keep the child's attention in ways such as asking retorical questions and using objects that the child can relate like toys for example plus keeping it interesting and repetative
