My daughter is going to miss the last four days of summer school. Our family is going away on a 7 day trip. Should I tell the truth about our 7 day lake trip, or say she's sick everyday? What should I write in the letter?

  1. If possible, reschedule the trip.  Under no circumstances would I lie about it, but I think you should go to the school and talk with them because it may affect whether she passes summer school or not.

  2. You should reschedule your trip if at all possible. It is important that your daughter learn to be responsible, and see that her education is a priority,  and lying to get her out of summer school for the last few days is NOT the way to do that.

If, for some reason the trip is for a family emergency or something that just can't be rescheduled, then be honest with the school and tell the truth!  That will teach your daughter another important lesson.

  3. Most schools there are things such as educational field trips. A lot the kids at the school I teach at go to Disney World during school and their parents fill out an educational field trip paper and it gets approved and the kids is not marked as absent. Check with your school.

  4. Go down to the school, sit down with the principal, and ask that question.  She'll tell you what you need to do (off the record).  Give them enough lead time, and they will give you work for the child to complete while out.  This way they still get paid (which is the bottom line).  If you call in sick, they get paid.  If you call in on vacation, they don't get paid, and they zap your kid to try to keep that from becoming a habit.
