I have a question on the fasfa please help me if you know anything about the fasfa

so i was wondering if i would be claimed as independant because i am having a baby in october which is going to be completly dependant on me. i am only 19 and that is the only requirement i meet, also is there money provided by the fasfa for housing, i want to attend a school that does not have dorms and i was wondering if the fasfa would help cover some living costs for off campus housing .. please reply !!! thankyou soo much

well the way fafsa sees how you are a dependent is the way you filed your tax return. if your parents filed their return and put you on as a dependent then you will be considered a dependent even though you have a baby of your own. fafsa doesnt give you money. they only determine what your financial standing is to go to school. it depends on the schools, federal aid, and grants to see how much money you get. but if you live off campus and apply for a loan, you can ask for extra money and usually the school will approve it because intsead of spending the money on dorming you are in housing and technically that is a school expense.

The person above is giving you the wrong information. You are a dependent if you can NOT answer yes to the question of being over 24 years of age, have a baby that you support, are married, are a ward to the state and a few others. When you fill out the FAFSA you fill it out AS OF TODAY! As of right now you haven't given birth, so you are a dependent being under the age of 24. If you wait until after the baby is born you will be considered independent, and only your income will play a role in getting aid. If dorms are not available at the school you pick, your additional aid can be used for living expenses, but tuition and books are paid for first and you get the remainder back in the form of a check.
