I'm a 33 yo male and considering changing my career to a commercial pilot.

Is 33 too old to start in this line of work?

I can do an advanced diploma in aviation in one year in perth wa, and country work is avalible.

Do airlines employe people in ther mid 30ies?

Thanks.

  1. Nope.

If you have your Private Pilot's Multi engine and Instrument it will be a piece of cake. If you don't you may want to fly as a hobby because it can be VERY challenging is you don't start flight school and building hours at a young age. (16ish.)

As you know a Private Pilot's is required for a CPL.

    FAA Requirements are followed.

FAA commercial fixed-wing pilot license with an instrument rating

Current FAA First Class Medical Certificate

Passing score on FAA ATP written exam preferred

Now usually airlines want a Minimum of 1,200 hours of total documented flight time. That's another challenge, building flight time.

yes pilot's hire in mid 30's......I've only seen a few Major airline Captains under the age of 40.

    best of luck

  2. Its not too late ,but don't leave it too long.

I'm in the same boat and about to start my advanced diploma next week in Brisbane and I'm 30.

From the research I've been doing airlines do employ people in there mid 30's but not too much older than that as they are looking for people they can employ for 20 to 30 years as the airlines spend alot of money in your training and want to make sure it is worth while to them to have some one stick around for  a good length of time.

Its a career change for me too but im very excited about it.

The only worry is getting the hours up after the course to be able to get employment.

One good way is to get an instructor rating and get your hours up that way, there seems to be plenty of work for instructors at the moment due to a shortage and it is something the airlines like to know you have that experience.

    Good luck with your decision.

  3. 1) 33 is not too old to start your aviation career.

    2) Yes - airlines employ people in their mid 30s.

  4. The regionals that are hiring are just looking for warm bodies. if the "airlines" are your only point of reference for professional aviation, then you are limiting yourself. Go fly an RJ with "Comair" if that's your thing. But there's a lot more to professional aviation than that.To answer your age question, you are not too old.

  5. You do not need a Private ticket to get a Commercial.  With no previous flight time, meeting the requirements in Part 61 and taking the checride will do.

  6. Don't listen to Comair, as he is only a young teenager.  I know many people who started even later than you are.  If you really want it, you can do it.  Don't let anyone tell you different.  I've known pilots who have been hired in their 50's.  What do you think happens when airlines go out of business?  All of the pilots, of all ages, get new jobs.  If you want to do it, do it now.  In fact, I have a friend who just went to ASA at 35.  She was an ambulance driver about two years ago.  Good luck.

  7. Yes they do.

I became an Airline pilot when I was 37.

I am also a pilot recruiter, previous work history and accomplishments are important considerations during the hiring process.

However if you have no formal flight training you must begin as soon as possible.

It will take a lot more than one year to acquire the requisite licenses and experience.

However it is not too late, Good luck!
