I have a learning disability. I just struggle in school and that's it. Now my boyfriend has ADD. If I were to marry someone like him and have children, would they also have ADD?

  1. It is not a given that your children would inherit either his ADD or your learning disability.  However, there is an increased likelihood that they would exhibit one or both of the parent's diagnosis. 15 - 40% of children with ADD have a parent with the same. Additionally, children mimic their parents and pattern their behaviors after what they see.

  2. It is possible that the child may also have ADD but that would hot be something to be concerned about.  Many adults and children function quite well with ADD.  Both of my parents have ADD and my brother has it as well.  I have not been diagnosed with it but I do wonder at times if I should.  Nowadays you need to be more concerned about a child having Autism.

  3. You could do genetic testing if you were concerned.  In my experience though it is not unusual to see children with some neurobiological issues have parents or other family members that also have similar issues.
