If you put a buzzard in a pen that is 6 feet by 8 feet and is entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. But why?

  1. Unless you teathered it or put mesh on the roof it would definatly be able to get out. i've seen buzzards do almost virtical takeoffs before.

Anyone who thought about keeping a buzzard like this is just askingfor trouble. of course it would get out.

  2. The theory here is that the bird will be unable to gain enough lift in that small amount of space to clear the top.

  3. I think it's because it wouldn't be able to open it's wings enough. Even if it did get them open someway, there wouldn't be enough room to flap or get any lift.

  4. They need it to be fully closed.

  5. Buzzards are heavy birds, they either need room to get off the ground, or the easiest for them is to take flight off of a cliff, or tree, or building, something off the ground. I learned this watching a live educational bird presentation at a fair. They had a buzzard, and for it to fly, they put it atop a building. Also, they are silent when they fly, something to do with the kind of feathers on their wings.
