I have a question regarding my new cat?

We just got a new cat last night. He is about 4 or 5 years old. Last night he was friendly to us. This morning he is hiding under the bed. I tried to coax him out, calling his name to no avail. Any one else had such an experience? Thank you, ahead of time, for any answers.

  1. Cats are funny, he may be still  not trusting of you or you did something to him that scared him, maybe a loud noise. If your friendly with the cat he'll come around and be more comfortable with you. Buy a toy and a certain snack and rattle the bag or  toy to have him come out.

  2. He just needs time. You should always start a cat out in a small room with food, water and litterbox (like a large bathroom or guest room). Make sure you can go in there are just spend time with him (you don't have to try to pet him, just sit and chat quietly or read) often. Get him used to you and the noise of the household before letting him out of that room. When HE is ready to go explore more, just give him a little more room (in my case, we closed all the bedroom doors - except the one she was in) and slowly expanded his area. This may take a few weeks, but you'll have a happier and more well-adjusted cat in the end.

Imagine yourself not being around anyone else ever, then being put in the middle of a busy mall with no idea of where you were or where to go - you'd be scared and full of anxiety. Please try this, it works for older cats and kittens.

  3. the cat is uncomfortable with its new surroundings - it basically needs time to adapt. they are fairly stubborn so let it be

  4. He may have been scared by a loud noise.  Do you have any children who might have scared him?  He may just be adjusting to his new home and wants some time to himself.  Has he come out lately to eat and drink and use the litter box?  You may want to put the 3 things by the bed gradually moving them out further and further until he feels comfortable enough to come out.

  5. Absolutely normal. Just put out litter, cat food, water where he can easily find them and totally ignore him. A new place is strange and it takes time fot the cat to adjust. Mine hid behind the book case and took 2 days to adjust. When he is ready, he will come to you. You might also shove some cat treats under the bed (or where he is currently hiding and walk away. That also helps.

  6.   Just give your new cat time and space when it feels ready it will come out of hiding .

  7. I got my cat from the shelter... for about 2 weeks she hid under the couch during the day, but would come out at night and sleep at the edge of the bed with us... I think she did not like activity OF ANY KIND, until she adjusted.  Now you would never know that she was once so timid... Leave him be for awhile. He will come out when he is ready....

  8. I adopted two cats about a month ago. Clyde was in every hiding spot he could find - behind the bathroom toilet, under my armoire, everywhere that I couldn't get to him. About two weeks went by and he'd finally started realizing that I wasn't scary or mean. There are still times where he gets spooked and hides but they are less and less. It just takes time.
