In the morning, I always see little rainbows in my house on the wall... if you know what I mean. My question is, what are they called and how do they appear?

  1. "Rainbows appear in the sky when there is bright sunlight and rain. Sunlight is known as visible or white light and is actually a mixture of colors. The sun's rays pass through millions of rai ndrops. A raindrop acts like a prism by reflecting, refracting and scattering the sunlight to form one large rainbow.

You can only see a rainbow if the sun is behind you and the rain in front. You can even make your own rainbow with a garden hose or water sprinkler on a sunny day. The longest lasting rainbow was in North Wales, and it lasted over 3 hours.

Sometimes there is another faint rainbow outside the main one. In the second one, the colors are reversed where blue is on the outside and red is on the inside. If you click on this picture, you will see a reversed second rainbow to the left of the main one. "

  2. Well, that happens in my house too. What happens when the sun is shining through the window  it refracts just right and causes little rainbows on the wall. The window can split the light into the colors.

  3. Probably it will be a glory. Atmospheric optics has a fairly good explanation, and a couple of nice pics in the "Glory" section.

  4. if light goes throught glass at the right angle it splits the rays...
