I have a rat that I have had for a little over 6 months and I am kind of concerned. She has just over the last week gained weight, had hair loss around her nipples, made nests and has become less social. I think she may be pregnant but I am very unsure because we dont have a male but I did read on the internet that they can hold sperm and then get pregnant without there being a male and where I got her from they had males and females in the same cage so do you think she is pregnant? Please let me know by emailing me at horselvr321@gmail.com or just answering this question on here

Thanks!!

  1. good possibility

  2. Are there any wild rats around?  Rats can mate through bars... and it only takes a matter of seconds...

  3. yes! congrats! do some research a call your vet!

  4. Maybe a wild rat got in with her. They can't hold sperm that long, it dies. Otherwise she could be sick.

  5. Sperm does not last 6 months in a rat!  But she sounds pregnant; is it possible that a wild rat got in contact with her?

Wild house rats are the same species as pet store rats, but very different temperament.

A cross between a wild rat and a pet rat will have a lot of wild instincts, it may not be tame as it grows up.

On the other hand, maybe she has a false pregnancy or other hormone disorder.  I have not heard of this in a rat, but I suppose it is possible.

The gestation period for rats is 3 weeks; if no pups are born by then, she was not pregnant.
