The A/C will turn on with no problem. Sometimes it will run for days w/ no problems. Eventually, the power cord will trip. I can then reset the power cord, turn the unit back on and it will run for an hour or so before it trips again. The only thing I've noticed that will indicate to me that it's going to trip is a clicking sound from the back near the fan/condenser area. I originally thought the fan was hitting something, but then realized I only hear this noise when the power cord is close to tripping. I had an A/C tech over recently - he's not sure what the problem is. He recommended changing out the power cord. But what's making the clicking sound and can it be related to the power cord tripping?

  1. call an electricianmaybe your breaker is too small.  you might start a fire.

  2. It's not a circuit breaker problem.  I'd suspect a blower motor or compressor capacitor problem but that's a shot in the dark.  There are a couple of other things including the compressor start relay malfunctioning.  Be sure you check all wiring connections and terminals for signs of arcing.

  3. It is about time to replace the AC unit.  I don't think the money to fix the present unit is a good investment. You shouldn't run without the GFI.

  4. The clicking you hear is probably water hitting the fan blade in the back. The cord breaker is a ground fault detector so water is probably getting into power somewhere and causing it to trip.Try running it on a three way adapter if it doesn't trip that is probably your problem, but I wouldn't leave it that way have it checked out.

  5. It could be from ice building up. Air conditioners are prone to condensation in the air freezing and lowering the efficiency. Overheating can then occur.

  6. Make sure the ac condensate drain is not stopped up.  Perhaps there if too much water collecting and spraying somewhere it shouldn't be.
