I have a running/ jogging question!?

Hi. I am about to join the Marines. I am NOT a runner!!! I know that when you get to boot camp you are required to run a 10 min mile. To all of you this may not seem hard. I am however a horrible runner! I can do all the rest of the physical stuff, just NOT running.

I need to be able to do this 10 min mile when I get there. Any running plans you guys have for beginners to be able to build up to a 10 min mile in 8 wks would be great!! I leave the first week in Nov. So I need a plan now! I have looked and cant find one!

Any help would be great thanks!

  1. shoot for 8 mins that way even on your bad day you can make 10 mins i have to run a 5 min 30 sec mile in highschool and i am horrible as well at running it is possible just work for it.

it will only get harder in the marines

  2. Ok, so you are just wanting to concentrate on the mile time right?

Start of just jogging, getting your muscles used to running because if you didn't do running really before then they will probably be sore after running for a while but it will soon pass.

When you have got used to running and you are able to go at a steady pace without feeling uncomfortable, go on Mapmyrun.com and create a route near where you live and measure it out to a mile (mile=1.609344km)

    Id just do to 1.61km

Ok, so then you do that route with a timer, just do it once, time it and get used to the route, the feel, and the pace, ect. And ALWAYS finish with a sprint finish if it's your last bit of running!! Make the time better :P

The next time, do 3 miles with 5 minutes rest in between as fast as you can, still timing.

Do lots of other training too, but remember not to pile it all on too soon as it can cause injuries :(

Lots of hill training will help too.

Also, make a circular route of mapmyrun.com and do fartlek which is where you would do straightside sprint, curve jog, straightside sprint ect.

Good luck and i really hope you pass! Make sure you have a healthy diet, consume lots of WATER DAILY and buy PROPER running shoes, i am not joking, even if they are really expensive, they are worth it because you will end up like me with awful shin splints if you don't

  3. I suppose if I was going to coach you the first thing I would yell into your face is that you CAN run without stopping.

    Running requires mental toughness.

  4. try just jogging MORE than a mile i joined cross country and i wasnt a runner, try running like 3 miles not stopping but it doesn have to be fast, then maybe try running 2 miles but faster, then work your way down back 2 one and one mile will seem so much easier!!! and then just concentrate on breathing and maybe moving your legs a little faster and take kinda long strides...glad to help...GO GET EM DUDE! soooo awesome for you to join the marines ;D youll be great

  5. you can do a mile in 10 minutes easily

just run everyday and try to make that your goal!

    good luck!

  6. Start off running as slow as you can. When you run, count each step up to four. On the fourth- exhale. In other words- 1,2,3, exhale, 1,2,3, exhale........

Get used to that and then you will slowly be able to count/run faster. It's a matter or getting a rhythm going. You can do it.

  7. Make sure that you find a good pair of running shoes to start out.  You don't want to be in pain, or run the risk of injuries, all because of something that is preventable.  Finding the best running shoes is something worth your time.

I suggest stopping in and talk to a specialty running shoe store so they can figure out what kind of feet you have and how you run.  This will help them match a shoe to your running style so you will have the best running shoes that you can.  This will give you the best chance of being the most efficient at running that you can be, without having to worry about your feet hurting, or developing other runners ailments like shin splints.
