I have a safety question. I live in a two story condo w/ a back gate that leads to the patio and back door.?

There are big windows that were installed that do not have any window coverings. If someone were downstairs looking in w/ a flashlight, they could see everything that's downstairs. It's not much, but if they need a leather couch or a 10 year old 32" tv, they could see it. Anyway, I usually latch the gate, but last night I locked it. My boyfriend asked what I'm afraid of. Couldn't someone cut through that glass while I'm upstairs and I wouldn't know it? (No, I don't have an alarm)

Please no rude remarks. Thanks

  1. ever here of window shades?

  2. If you are concerned it is worth the peace of mind to invest in an alarm system.

It doesn't matter if you have large windows or not, if somebody really wants to get in, they will.

  3. You don't need an entire alarm system...

    1) get some good drapes or blinds.

    2) Get a simple, single, 9-v battery-powered motion sensor alarm at a local hardware store.  The are usually about 5 inches high, by 3 inches wide, by 2 inches deep.

    3) Mount this single alarm where it can 'see' the window.  They usually have two settings:  Chime and alarm.  Use the alarm setting.  It should be at least 4.5 feet from the window, but no more than 7 feet away.  Experiment until you find the best place to place it.

    4) They accept regular or rechargeable 9v batteries.

    5) Close the drapes or blinds.  Now if something happens, the alarm will go off at the occurrence of motion, like some one breaking in....

    6) Keep a regular corded line phone by your bed.  A cordless phone is too easily jammed.  A cell phone,, if you are really worried, would be better.

    7) If you have any other 'worry places' buy an alarm for those spots too.  They are only about $12 dollars anyway, and they last about 6 years, if they are not exposed to bright sunlight.

  4. they wouldn't cut your glass.they would break it or key bump your door.

  5. 1.  This question has NOTHING to do with safety.

    2.  You can put up your own window covering.  Most leases I have had actually REQUIRED me to supply window covering.

    3.  Short of iron bars, window covering would not even slow a thief down.

  6. You do whatever you need to do to feel safe. I think your boyfriend was very insensitive to your wanting to improve security.

  7. I'd be more concerned that even without a flashlight, people outside at night could see you without you knowing they are there.  You need black out shades on the window and motion sensitive lights outside.  We have popped people looking in windows (and being creepy for lack of a better term), due to alert neighbors.  The victim was not even aware.  We have also been called to the scene of people discovering in the morning what is obvious evidence of someone spending quite a bit of time outside a bedroom window.  Something as simple as a bell or small door ajar alarm would help too on the gate.  Look in the child care section or the hardware store.  They have all kinds of things that make noise so you know a door is being opened.

  8. Talk to the landlord of the condo.

Invest in an alarm system.  They have ones that plug into the wall, and if anyone touches your house, or glass, it will go off.

A burglar is not going to cut your glass, they will break it.  It is much more tedious, and time consuming to break glass.

Also, get some blinds / curtains for your window.  These will disallow view into your home when you don't want it.

You can also talk to your police department and ask them to patrol around your area.  Tell them you are afraid for your safety, and they will increase security in that area.

    Good luck,

    Stay safe.
