I have a seated liberty coin with a big S on the back. does anyone know what it is?

It is a small silver coin with "seated liberty"n the front but on the back there is a large fancy S. the edges around the S are scalloped.

  1. It sounds like you have what is called a "love token". It was common during the 1870's-1890's and even earlier to take a seated liberty dime or 1/2 dime and sand down the reverse so that the image was gone and have an initial or 2, engraved there. The engraving was the fancy type. A guy would give his girl one with his initial on it. I believe the practice started in England. It first was done on silver 6 Pence for that was the coin put into the brides shoe for good luck.
