I'm competing at freeskate four (waltz jump-loop jump, loop jump, sitspin, spiral sequence, scratch spin, power threes)

It's my first program with music, any tips on how not to be nervous. Stuff you do before the competition.

also I practiced my program once with my dress and I was so cold, do you get cold during your program with no gloves or anything?

  1. I hope I'm not too late in answering!!

The best advice I've ever gotten about nervousness:

Nervousness is a GOOD thing . . . you need it to give you that extra kick to get you through the program - go adrenaline!!! It's normal to get nervous and everyone gets the jitters . . . the key is finding the way to make the nerves work for YOU. Think of it as a positive thing . . . instead of saying you're nervous, let's just say you are EXCITED! What a privelege to be skating for your family and friends!

Stay warm as much as you can until you skate.  Stay in a warm room or keep on a warm up outfit . . . a jacket at least!!  Hopefully you already have a warm up/stretching routine planned out . . . I think I started it like a half hour before my ice warm up time.  When you're up to skate, take your jacket off like a minute before you're up so you get used to the chill.  (Most of the time I got so nervous that coldness was the last thing on my mind - hee hee).

Some people listen to music so they don't hear other people's music (my friend used joke tapes).  Others just face the other direction from the rink so you don't watch the skaters (my coach once had me face the wall).  Well, it's good to have distractions . . . but after so many competitions, I personally ended up not using distractions.

Remember to BREATHE . . .one tends to hold their breath when they get nervous. You need oxygen in you to keep up the stamina!! And bend those knees!!

Take your time getting to your starting point. I always did one circle of crossovers and waved to the audience - the friendly cheer always made me feel better. Close your eyes and take a deep breath and tell yourself you can do this. Show time!

Think in the present. Think about each move as you do them - don't think about what you just did - and don't think too far ahead with what more you need to do.  Focus on what you're doing now.

No matter how nervous you feel out there, don't ever show it. Look confident in your body and facial language - right when you step on that ice - including warm up. Sometimes acting confident will help with the nerves - because you're too busy playing the part!! Even if you fall or mistake, get up quickly and keep going like it didn't happen.

Good luck tomorrow!  Skate well!  Woo hoo!!

  2. Warm up warm up warm up

    and

off ice off ice off ice

    they're really important

    n don't forget on ice

Dance with ur heart. Show the jurors ur best smile (If the song is not depressed song).

    gd luuuuck =]

  3. Im not a performer or anything, but just pretend no one is watching. GOOD LUCK!!

  4. I compete some freestyle, as well as ice dancing, and yes, I definitely get cold, but usually, I am so nervous that I don't even realize how cold I am...sometimes, when you are nervous, picture yourself doing an awesome performance right before you go on, and think about how great it would be for you to win...As soon as you get out on the ice, all of the nervousness definitely goes away, and it's always really, really fun, once you get out on the ice...

  5. since it's a competition, no matter how curious you are, whatever you do, DON'T watch the others. it will s***w with your feelings. and you put this question up at 10 - you should be asleep!! and just listen to music. drink plenty of water and get to sleep. and hey, the music should just make it more fun, and help you get in the mood!! and don't wear gloves during competition. they only get in the way. and shouldn't your coach be helping you instead of a bunch of random people from the internet??

anyway, good luck!! you'll do fine.

feel great, do great. and if you mess up, just smile and laugh, and no one will notice. just don't stay on the ice for too long.

and most importantly - - have FUN!!!!! trust me, it will show if you are having fun

  6. Take a deep breath. Try to get some ice time just to practice a bit. Don't worry! Feel confident and relax. Stretch a bit before to so you don't get muscle tightening or cramps.

    Good luck! ^^

  7. ok about nervousness....so don't freak out. people are here to watch you! and great job! im trying to teach myself a waltz jump but i fall and it hurts!! anyways....just do what you have to do...don't think about other people. and if u say u cant or u didnt do this or that ur gunna forget how to do it! so just calm down...deep breath and DONT BE NEGATIVE! and about being cold...i know how it feels like to be in a skating dress and freezing cold wear a jacket before you have to go on the ice and warm up as much as you can and wear gloves for training not for competing.  HOPE THIS HELPED!
