The most effective, yet safe way to clean it as it's rather dusty and horrible looking now.

Thanks!

  1. Hm. The answer before mine could be right DEPENDING on what process was used to preserve the head... nowdays some of the cheaper heads on the market are freeze-dried and not sealed correctly... if any moisture comes in contact with an area that hasn't been sealed properly on a freeze-dried mount, you're in for quite a stink after a while. Safest method if you're not sure if it's a freeze-dried head or not is to wipe it down with a soft, dry cloth and not let the dust build up on it to begin with. The eyes are glass or plastic either way, so you can carefully clean them with a paper towel moistened with glass cleaner, but I'd be very careful about getting any moisture on the skin itself if there's any possibility that it's a freezedried head.

  2. Examples: All salt and freshwater fish mounts as well as snake, alligator etc. Fish mounts can be restored without the need to repaint using Seybrite products. These types of mounts are delicate and require careful handling. Use feather duster or soft rag to remove surface dust. Mist entire mount with cleaning solution. Allow cleaning solution to dissolve soil (about ten minutes). With care, wipe mount with damp soft rag in the direction of scales if present. Be careful not to snag on fins or other parts of mount. Suggestion; spray cleaning solution into open mouth and open gills. Let cleaner dissolve soil then rinse out with clean water. This removes dirt and soil from the gills. Spray mount with Sheen and Shield protector.

  3. while in africa last year i found a crocodile head which i bought home, i placed it on the mantlepiece, it started to gather dust, i thought.. mmm this is not satisfactory, i paid 20 rand for this accessory, it should stay clean.

since then i have established that the best way to clean the head is to purchase a brillo pad and some expensive cillet bang, combine the two in a panasonic microwave and gently dab the head. after 3 and a half minutes of dabbing, remove the excess soap with a hair dryer.

this will create a greasy product, yet show the character of the crocodile as it should be. following this the teeth can be maintained with the simple yet affective toothbrush. aquafresh toothpaste plc work the best.

any problems let me know. this process also worked on my giraffes head
