Does your bathroom have a window, and if so, do you get good sunlight through it? Bright colors and plenty of light will help the room feel larger. Also, when you do choose a color and paint, include the ceiling with that same color. "Capping" the room with a white ceiling can make it feel small as well.

Oh, one last thing, would you have room for a good size mirror? Perhaps one for the inside of the bathroom door. Adding a mirror may help give the room the illusion of being larger also.

Yes, dark colours in a small room definitely makes the room look smaller.  If you wanted a dark colour though, you could do a couple in that colour and then the other two in a light colour. You could also do two walls in a light colour, and then the other two patterned. Or, just do them all in a nice sea-blue or green, and put dolphin or sea-shell transfers up! Remember though, that the proper bathroom paint is the best, because it's waterproof, and easy to clean!
