  1. Clean the filter more often, put some screening around the filter, add some chemical to kill the weeds in the water

  2. figure out where the gunk is coming from and make that stop.... really, tho, if you're going to have a water feature, checking and cleaning off the pump every few days is part of the having....you cannot expect to just start one up and have it run fine the whole season!..... you need to add or refresh the water in it regularly, so cleaning off the pump should be part of that.....

if there's a tree or something dropping stuff in the water feature, try a netting .... or look for a plastic box or a couple of trays (fwire together to make a box) that you can set the pump into, then wrap with panty hose or other fine netting... that will give you more time to ignore the pump before that has to be rinsed off....

  3. It depends on what it is being clogged with.

  4. get a couple of canes and some fine mesh and erect near entrance to pump so it creates a barrier to obstruct larger particles entering into the pump , or place some stones in a mound near the pump inlet to filter larger deleterious matter . pair of gloves and scoop it out .

  5. Change/ wash filter or put on a better filter. Make sure no weeds near inlet.
