  1. This is a GREAT article that sums it up in a few words.

Those with lung cancer are stigmatized by being "blamed" for their illness.....blame accompanied by shame, guilt, fear, criticism, etc.

Here is another one from the British Medical Journal:

  2. I dont think Lung Cancer is a stigma. Its a terrible desease, caught in mant different ways. Not just smoking.

  3. Lung cancer might be one of them.

  4. Some scientists say that smoking does not lead to lung cancer although it contributes to many other illness including a closing of the arteries.

Things that are causing cancer - Chemicals in our foods especially processed foods, too much sugar, chemicals being put in our water including fluoride which destroys the thyroid gland and leads to cancer.  Environment pollution, prescription drugs which are full of synthetic chemicals which attacks the immune system, lack of basic vitamins, bad diet and lack of exercise.

  5. I don't think there is a stigma around lung cancer.

    Anyone can get it !

  6. Lung Cancer is still synonymous with smoking, which now, certainly in the UK, has been stigmatised almost to the point of outright product ban!

So, you could discuss the impact on the NHS.

However, other causes which do not get the same press are those older generation who have worked all their life in industry and have contracted cancers due to the substances they were exposed to.

Asbestos, so construction and ship workers...chemical workers, men and women in factory environments when health and safety laws were not as robust!

Research on here and good luck!

  7. well Roy Castle...the tv comedian & presenter was an example of a non smoker contracting lung cancer.  he worked in clubs for many years & blamed passive smoking on his condition....could be an idea to use him as an example maybe?

  8. another thought for you is that working in the coal and shipbuilding industries have been found to have a link to cancer also, i.e working with asbestos and such materials, sorry i don't have a link to help you out with this, but my friends died with lung cancer and he was a miner for many years.  Just makes you wonder doesn't it.
