  1. The great thing about Digital8 camcorders is that they can read all of the digital 8mm tape formats including Hi-8.

Connect your Digital8 camcorder to the computer using Firewire (also known as i.Link, IEEE 1394, and DV port), and put in the Hi-8 or other digital 8mm tape.  You can then use Windows Movie Maker (in Windows) or iMovie (on a Mc) to capture your video from the camcorder to the computer.

Once you have edited your movie, you can export it to the format you need.  You will then be able to copy the movie to data CD as long as it is less than 700mb.  If you need more space, burn the movie to a data DVD the same way you burn the movie to a data CD.

on a Mac, you can also use iDVD to make Video CDs or Movie DVDs.

  2. You've mentioned Digital8 and Hi8 - they're not the same.

If you've got a Digital8 camcorder you'll need to capture the video via firewire - if your PC hasn't already got one you'll need to install a firewire card. They're cheap, easy to install and readily available. You'll also need a firewire cable. Once everything's connected you can capture and edit the video with Windows Movie Maker (it should already be on your PC), save it as DV-AVI (it's under Save on My Computer, Best quality show more choices, Other settings) and then write it to DVD using DVD Flick.

Hi8 camcorders are analog, so you'll need a converter such as the Kworld DVD Maker or Pinnacle Dazzle.
