I have a suzuki 550 1980 when i open it up it bogs down for a second then opens whats wrong wat will help

i open up throtle it slitly boggs down then opens up what could be wrong will carb cleaner help how much should i use in the gas tank also what carb cleaner works the best its a motercycle

  1. You may have to take these carbs off and have them disassembled and clean with a bath in carb cleaner. Spray on stuff won't clean out a gunked up carb.

    The 550 also had a tendency to run lean.


  2. yeah it could be jets, but sounds also like a vac drop.

  3. i suspect your pilot jet is clogged, at what rpm does it open up?

  4. If your bike has ordinary throttle slide carbs, whacking open the throttle will drop the vacuum so much that they stop drawing fuel.  That type of carb will have small rectangular or round tops, maybe 1X2 inches or 1 1/4" across if round.

    If your carbs are CV, the top will be much bigger, maybe 2-3" across and round or square.  Adjusting the idle jet screws should help.  They are likely to be brass with a slot for a flat screwdriver.  Try turning all four in 1/4-1/2 turn and if it runs worse, turn them out that amount.  I imagine your bike has Mikuni carbs and the idle screws controlled air on some and fuel on others.
