My window AC unit drips the condensed water outside but my wall unit does not. Is this water collecting somewhere causing the swampy smell? How do I get rid of it? How do I prevent it in the future?

  1. you have a clogged weep tube (the little hole or straw sticking out the back of the unit) chances are you have some algae

growing in there. once the weep hole is cleared the smell should

dissipate  . always clean filters before summer

  2. I thank I would check the filter or filters of both units

thay may need to be clened

and look at the finns of the unit if thay have lint on thim

    thay need clened

vineger spraed on the fins thin a small wier brush

    used on them

whin you brush the fins you need to go the same direshen

    as the fins.

  3. You are going to have to put the air condition on a pitch so the water drains properly

  4. It's probably mold inside the actual unit.  I would hire someone to come take it apart and clean it, which need to be done several times a year anyway.

  5. You didn't tell us much about YOUR unit they are not all the same.

Most units these days hold water all the time. They have a band around the rear fan called a "slinger" that picks up the water and throws it against the hot coils evaporating it. This improves the efficiency particularly in real hot weather because an a/c unit uses the outside air to cool. This makes it "water cooled" to an extent.

But that water will stay in there long past when you use it until it drys out. That promotes growth. More likely algae than mold.

The unit likely needs to be pulled out of the case and cleaned. This should be done at times anyway to clean the rear coil for efficiency. They also sell treatment for a/c's to prevent algae growth.

My new window unit has a plug that can be removed to allow the water to drain for high humidity areas. I don't know if you wall unit has that option.

    Good Luck.

  6. Definitely mold. You will want to clean that out.

  7. I'm a little confused. Do you have a window unit and a wall unit. What is a wall unit?

Sounds like you need to clean the unit and check and clean the drain. If you have a window unit through the wall. You need to remove it, clean good, use coil cleaner on the coils, put the unit back in at an angle so the water drains down hill. Make sure you keep the filter clean.
