The house was custom built in the 50s and does not have overhead lighting in the bedrooms. I would like to install overhead lights and run the wires behind the wall, wiring it directly to the switched outlet. I know I couyld plug it in the outlet, but I would like to conceal the wires. Is this possible/safe?

Note: only the top plug is switched.

  1. Not a problem you certainly can wire to the switch. It was used for a lamp switch so you are not making any changes.

  2. It is possible, easy if you know what you are doing. Messy to open the walls and patch them.  Do you have access to the ceiling, or is it a second floor above it?

All of this means you need to make decisions and have a qualified professional do the work.

  3. Sure it's possible!

Run a switch leg up to the lights you install from the switch for the receptacle.  Remove the receptacle's wiring from the switch and wire it so that it's hot all the time.  Connect the switch leg to the switch.  Of course that's just an outline of what needs to be done.

I don't suggest you do the work though.  If you're asking complete strangers if it can be done then I imagine you're not the best candidate to do electrical work...especially on wiring installed in the 50's.

Put up the frogskins and please call a qualified electrician.

  4. My house was built in 1978 and it is like that in some of the rooms.  It is possible to install an overhead light and connect it to the wall switch, we will be doing that eventually.  It's not going to be easy, but it can be done.  Anytime you are dealing with electricity you should definitely use a certified electrician.
