I have a tax code of 335P and am paying tax, presumably correctly. ?

My part time earnings have been given a tax code of 543L X and no tax has been deducted. Can anyone explain please.

  1. Steve's answer does not make sence.

    Your code of 335P indicates that you are over 65 - is this the code operated against a pension?

    543L X is emergency code - you cannot have two sets of allowances as high as this. Email me with your circumstances and I will try and sort it out for you - you seem in a bit of a tangle.


  2. Since you gave 2 codes I assume you have 2 jobs.

    'Normally' the 'standard' code (543L) would be applied to the higher paying job (usually the full time job) and a code of 0L would be applied to the lower paying job (usually the part time one).

    The 335P code is a 'provisional' code and, assuming the total wages from both jobs exceeds your Personal Allowance (about £5430) this year, there will be more tax to pay ..

    Contact (write) to your local Tax office explaining you have 2 jobs and get you Tax codes sorted out as soon as possible..

    PS It's not possible to 'steal' some-ones identity simply from their Tax code - half the working population has a code of 543L (however your NI number is another matter) :-)
