Question:

I have a teacher who makes you give money (read on) ?possible extortion?

You see I go to a private school and there is a Spanish teacher who at one point in the year only allows Spanish to be spoken in the class and if you speak English on accident or purpose you have to pay 10 or 20 cents or something like that.

Is it legal even though it's a private school? It's like a teacher saying they have the right to beat the students or murder them and if they don't like it then it's fine because it's a private school and they don't have to go there.

I would prefer answers from those who have experience with something like this or in law.

Thanks and God bless,

~Pete

  1. illigal practice to carry serious fine

  2. This happens illegal practice to carry serious fine of person in my home country. Here same thing.

  3. the actual concern of an administrator would be what did the teacher use it for?  was it used to buy the pens her students are always borrowing?maybe she wants to fund a class fiesta? or did the teacher use it for herself?  that would be the most inappropriate aspect of the situation if it were true.

it's ten cents.  your teacher mistakenly adopted a poor teaching technique so you should give her a break for being human.

i dont' think you should run off telling on the teacher and getting her into a whole crapload of trouble until you give her the chance to recognize her mistake.  if you can't confront her yourself, leave her a note.  getting others involved should be a last resort because you might get her in big trouble for an innocent mistake.

  4. Being a private school makes things different. I would speak to your parents about your concerns and ask them to take it further.

  5. No its not illegal.

You do not have to pay. refuse. see what happens.

Your parents will get called in, you will make a big stink, you will win because they cant make you pay - and then youll have to put up with that teacher all year.

remember you are at a private school. It is not a right to be there - they *can* ask you to leave.

What probably will happen is that the administration will ask the teacher to stop the practice. He will then find another way way - probably simply failing you.

And try not to go crazy with your examples - it makes you look extreme when you compare it to murder, beating and extortion - its simply a bad practice by a teacher - who can and did implement it.

but when you refuse to pay - *say it in spanish* :P
