to allow them to watch tv and be on the computer each day? I don't want them to spend too much time on either, but want to be reasonable. Any suggestions?

  1. I have a 10 & 8 year old. I allow them to get on the computer twice a day for 30 minutes at a time (when school isn't in session), during school they can have computer time once for 30 minutes.

As for the TV I don't really limit it, because they don't really watch very much TV. We try to keep the TV off as much as possible and they spend alot of time playing outdoors, riding bikes, etc...

  2. Well I would assume they are both in school for most of the day. So I would say a few hours at night on the t.v. and computer. On weekends, I would let them watch morning cartoons.. then let them go play with kids and outside, then later that night they can watch or play computer. I really don't see why parents want to limit tv and computer play though. I grew up with no restrictions on t.v. or computer... and I turned out fine and very smart I would say. My kids are 3 and 1, I have cartoons turned on all day, but they rarely watch tv... they are running around and playing for most the day and I play with them for most of the day. I do stop to do my online college courses, to cook, clean, and have "me" time. But I really don't see a purpose to controlling the tv or computer time. I would have them out for most of the day if there is great weather. The computer... just make sure to watch the websites they go to and have parental controls on. That way they are not doing anything inappropriate on the computer.

  3. I would suggest that you allow them a set amount of time (probably 1 or 2 hours) and let them choose whether they want to spend it in front of the TV or computer (or a combination of the two).  That way they still feel some power, while in fact you have set the guidelines.  My parents used to let me "earn" more TV time by reading or doing chores.  That's another way to allow them more time while still teaching responsibility.

    good luck!

  4. We do no TV on school days and what ever free time after homework and dinner can be on the computer. Maybe an hour?

Weekends cartoons are ok in the morning and later in the evening after what ever needs done.

TV goes off early on Sunday evenings too.

The computer is in the living room so its always in a high traffic area, no secrets!

  5. 3 hr no more then that

  6. have them playing outside twice as long as they are on the boob tube or the computer

  7. we let my 6 year old nephew on computer for 1 hour a day and after dinner (5pm) he gets pj's on then watches tv till 8pm bedtime.

I would do that for both kids.

  8. YOU are the parent of these children YOU have to determine how long they should watch television or be on the computer.  My three kids get an hour a day to do whichever they want.  This includes weekends.  Unless there is a program the entire family wants to see or we have a dvd the television isn't on that much.
