  1. pawing when tied is a sign of boredom and irritation. this means you have an inpatient horse that needs to be taught patience and manners. tie him up and walk away. let him paw, rear, buck, whatever he wants to do and IGNORE him....let him fight as long as he wants. when he finally stops and stands quietly for a few minutes without doing anything (don't leave him standing quietly for more than 5 minutes at first!) go untie him and put him back out in the pasture or wherever he lives. repeat this lesson waiting longer and longer once he's still to untie him. pretty soon he'll learn that pawing and throwing a fit won't get any attention and he won't get released until he's being good

  2. Could be boredom, trying to get your attention, or just asking for his food - my 35+ year old still  does it at tea time!! Also, the flies could be bothering him.

  3. usually a sign of impatience.   they also paw the ground or their bedding just before they have a roll.   but does he only do this under certain circumstances?   should never be left unattended if tied up as he could get his leg caught and get hurt.

but he's still young and hasn't yet learned everything yet, so you have to be patient with him

    good luck.

  4. My 5 year old welsh cob does this too. Every time he does it i hit his shoulder (not hard, but just to let him know that he shouldnt do it), and he usually stops then. He also does it when i am trying to pick his feet out or put boots on him.
