I have a tiny lawn and would like something that is a no-mow instead. Ideas please as the lawnmower man charges me fifteen dollars to mow and it takes him one and a half minutes.

  1. Change it all to perennial flowers and small, flowering bushes, grasses and (I love them) annual trailing petunias.

  2. Rock and some plants in pots.

    Maybe a small bush.

Pea rock or river rock is easy to use a grill on still and to walk on.

  3. I'm converting most of my 1-acre property to no-mow.

I'm replacing much of it with liriope ("monkey grass") and hardscaping like red granite boulders.

Monkey grass does not need to be mowed, grows in sun or shade, and is drought/flood tolerant; some varieties are evergreen and also produce little flowers.  And of course boulders can be moved around and don't die on you.

You can use stepping stones to create a winding path through your monkey-grass yard.  Add a water feature like an urn http://www.flickr.com/photos/21211516@N0... or birdbath, and you'll have a beautiful no-mow yard.

  4. Remove all the grass and plant some roses there.

  5. Mow the lawn yourself!

  6. lift the turf and put down weed membrane to stop weeds coming through and then cover with nice gravel and decorative stones, then you can plant through rockery plants or other plants that don't need much looking after.

  7. Garden stores are selling things called "steppables" now--these are low-growing ground covers that you can actually walk on. A lot of them have very nice scents--and the foliage is very different among the numerous varieties. You could plant a pattern using some different varieties of these. They don't require mowing or even trimming usually, and they smell great and look interesting.

An alternative is to get an electric trimmer--the kind with cords (instead of cordless) are very inexpensive--and do the mowing yourself with this. I used a trimmer for some tight spots in my yard, and it worked as well as the mower did.

  8. put in a pool with a high dive and I will be over to clean and maintain it free

  9. I don't really know what you mean, but kids who know how to use the lawnmower, are sometimes in need of money. Maybe you can find a kid who wants to make a little money, and say, charge him 5X for 10$? Something like that...
