Any advice on flea products and how much to use? I've read some bad reports , such as nerve damage while using flea meds. She is 8 yrs old and the previous owner never used flea products. I am nervous. I use K-9 Advantix on my other two small dogs but they weigh 11 and 17 lbs. Any good advice?

  1. I had a 4lb Pom that died from a HALF dose for a dog her size of those flea drops.......I have yet to find something that I am willing to use on my big dogs after that.

The poisons in the flea drops build up in the systems of the animals they are used on. All small dogs, older dogs and puppies are affected quicker because of their size and weaker systems. I wish I knew about this before I used it on my beloved Kimber. It has been a year yesterday and I still cry thinking about what that shlt did to her. It affects the nervous  and respiratory systems. My baby girl only 6 years old died within 36 hours of the drops being put on her. She was healthy and happy and thought I hung the moon. She developed seziures and had bright green gunk oozing from her nose that was from her lungs. It was a long weekend and she died 2 hours before the vet opened and we had no ER vet in the area or I would have sold an organ to have been able to take her there and save her. Upon seeing her afterward they said nothing would have saved her anyway. Mind you this is after ONLY HALF A DOSE for a dog her size.

  2. I would recommend Frontline. That's what our vet told us was best as it didn't have any bad side-effects. It works very well, been using it on him for yrs now.

  3. I had a lady tell me that she never uses flea meds on her dog. She always uses lemon Joy dish soap. When giving the dog a bath start with the ears first and rub it all over the dog. Then rinse it off very well, and then use a good dog shampoo that's gentle on the coat and skin. Rinse off well. She said that Lemon Joy repels the fleas and her dog has never had any on him since using it regularly. I always use frontline plus on my dog and I get it from Pet Med.com.

Pet Med will ask you how much your dog weighs so they will know which size vial to send. Good luck.

  4. REVOLUTION!!! It's made specifically for smaller dogs. Frontline can be harmful to smaller animals. My dog (a 6lb Yorkie) had an amazing reaction to the third dose we gave him. The vet said that it was basically an overdose of the meds. The monthly dose was too much for his small body to handle. He has been on Revolution now for a year with no reactions.

  5. I have a 3lb. yorkie and I use frontline from the vet.  I only use a small amount and not the usual dog dosage.  They are very small dogs, so you have to be careful use only small amounts.  My Daisy has never had a problem with any of this.

  6. Do you have fleas or are you worried about prevention? Honestly, a good diet is a great prevention. Dogs with top of the line foods don't get fleas near as often as dogs with the average kibble. You can also buy shampoos that help with prevention. I use Nature's specialties with citronella and cedar oil on my dogs. It helps ward off bugs of all kinds. Maybe you could also look into the effects of having the yard sprayed rather than the dogs?
