  1. In order to recover from a fatal crash you need a floppy drive to run a DOS boot disk, if you don't have one, you can't make one.  There are programs that claim to create the equivalent of a floppy disk on a cd, but they don't work properly.

You can try to recover the system by going into the BIOS and changing the master boot device from whatever it is (usually the hard drive) to the cd/ROM drive, then stick the installation cd in, it should then boot from there.

To change the BIOS you need to figure out which F key allows you to access it via DOS.  The right key could also be your Esc key.

Turn your system on and then immediately and rapidly click on your Esc key.  There is a tiny "sweet spot" during the startup process that allows you to access the BIOS, so keep clicking.

If you do not end up at the SYSTEM BIOS menu, then that's the wrong key, you'll need to try various F keys to find it.  I would start with F10, then F2, then F8, usually it's one of those.

Once you are in the BIOS simply change the master boot device to your CD/Rom drive, save the changes and exit, then restart your system.

It may be hard to figure out which device is your CD/Rom, so if the one you choose doesn't do it, just repeat the process and change it to another one until you find the right one.

Once you've got the master boot device set to the CD/Rom drive the system should boot from your cd and then you can follow the prompts that will be provided.

Once you're done your system SHOULD auto-switch back to the hard drive as the master boot device, if it doesn't though, just go in and change it back manually.

  2. hmm, install Linux (ubuntu) using program called "wubi"

    good luck

  3. If the laptop would only boot from floppy you couldn't use it for anything.

Enter BIOS (press Del or F1 at start) and change the boot order to 1 - CD-ROM, 2 - hard disk, 3 - floppy. Save and exit; while the laptop reboots put the win disk in the cd unit.

  4. Windows 95 installation is not possible by booting from the CD

Hence provision in BIOS for boot from CD is absurd

So you are off track there (as are the 2 posts above me)

Now that you mention your objective is installation of Windows 95, i presume your laptop is in working shape & you have some operating system in place. MS DOS 6.22 or Windows 3.1, whatever

Now all you have to do is boot up your laptop normally & then insert the Windows 95 disk into CD player and install from there.

    Cannot be simpler !

Now, should you face problems there (like your hard drive is absolutely blank) please let me know

solution in that case would be different
