I have a tree lifting my sidewalk if i remove the sidewalk can i trim the root of the tree before i put a new?

how can i trim the roots so the walk will be level.

  1. Dig around the root and cut it off. The tree will regrow roots into the area eventually, but it may be 10 or 20 years before it becomes a problem again.


  2. I would call an Arborist. They can tell you what should be done. Agree with other poster, cutting a root that is lifting the sidewalk will very likely kill it. It may take several years to die, but in that time it will become weaker and could come down on someone's house in a storm.

  3. If you 'trim' the tree roots that are substantial enough to lift the sidewalk, the tree may die. Trees should be at least 8 feet (2.5 meters) away from the sidewalk when planted. You should also be aware of any cables or pipes that may be underground around the root. This is why I suggest you seek the advice of a tree surgeon.
