Please post a photograph of the flowers to identify it correctly.

From your description it sounds like you have an okra plant.  They have yellow flowers and produce spiny okra pods.  If you could post a photo it would be easier to be positive.

You don't say what kind of plant it is. If it is a creeper it might be a Kiwano or Horned Melon. See pic at link.
