  1. The difference between 1080p and 1080i is in the scanning system. The p stands for progressive and i stands for interlace.

Interlaced" or "progressive" refers to the scanning system. In an interlaced format, the screen shows every odd line at one scan of the screen, and then follows that up with the even lines in a second scan. Since there are 30 frames shown per second, the screen shows one half of the frame every sixtieth of a second. For smaller screens, this is less noticeable. As screens get larger, the problem with interlacing is flicker. Progressive scanning shows the whole picture, every line in one showing, every sixtieth of a second.

Either 720p or 1080i will look great. try them both and see which one you perfer

    Hope this helps

  2. Actually the TV has one native resolution, so if the TV is a 720p set than that is the native resolution, if it's 1080i then go 1080i.  Even though the TV can accept all those resolutions it needs to scale the image to some degree to project the image.  You want to use as little scaling as possible.  The PS3 will also scale the image of the Bluray so go into the PS3 video setup screen and select the TV's native rsolution this way the PS3 will downscale the image from 1080p to the TV's native resolution and the TV will not need to do anymore scaling because the signal already scaled will be in it's purest downconverted form.

You should only want to scale once never twice.  Granted buying a 1080p set will have no scaling done by the PS3 player or the TV and will give you the best non scaled picture, but since you don't have a 1080p TV, set the TV itself to it's native resolution.
