I have a very big underbite

Question

i have a big underbite and i'm 16, my dentist said to me that if i was at least 14 it wouldn't take a lot of time to fix it with braces and now,because i'm 16, it would. I've red some of the answers about underbites and they say that after 14 braces won't help only surgery but my dentist thinks i should try braces because surgery could leave serious consequences . And another thing i want to know is how does this braces thing work.

p.s. my father has an underbite too but not as expressed as mine his is almost imperceptible(very small)

Most Orthodontist will give you a free consultation.  I suggest that you ask around and find a good Ortho and go talk to them.  They can give you a good estimate on how long it'll take.  Braces will probably be cheaper than surgery.  Having braces is not that bad.  I had them for about 2 years.

As you say you have big underbite, only orthognathic surgery is going to bring the correction. Further, it would depend on the position of your teeth whether pre and/or post surgical orthodontic treatment would be required or not.

Well the surgery for underbites is to cut into your head above your upper jaw and pull it forward which can cause serious problems with your naval cavity as they'll cut through that as well. Braces are attaching a wire mechanism to your teeth which allows dentists to tighten them in certain places allowing them to be aligned after a while (mildly painful takes several years), then they'll probably have to break your lower jaw, remove a section and pull it back then wire your mouth shut for a month or so.

Sometimes teeth are very very annoying (they had to do that to me)

ok ya try braces first regular braces not inviseline that take longer than regular braces and are more effective to my opinion so just try braces if it dosent work and u want straight teeth go ahead i want straight teeth although i only have a sliht over bite not noticeable and my bottom 4 teeth are going in i will have 2 get braces this year although im not even 14 yet so hope i helped
