I have a virus on my desktop pc, its a compaq xp. what should i do to delete this virus? please help me!?

My mom download a virus on my pc by mistake. i though it was a you-tube video and it asked to run. after that it download some kinda fake anti virus2008 thing! my norton anti virus has expired... i need something i can download from download.com to help me clean my pc off! i asked them would they clean it off for me but they wanna charge $99! please help me its telling me that i have viruses threats,malmare threats what should i do?! Compaq won't help! please and thank you!

AVG antivirus

and

AVAST.

Norton's is a resource hog and will slow your system to a crawl, and while well known it is not a high rated ( in detection / removal rates) program by those who test them (virus.gr, av-comparatives etc)
