  1. The drive you received will work, but you will need to change the shift cable location in your control box.If not when you shift into forward gear it will be in reverse. You will also need to buy a new prop that is for right hand rotation. You can hook it up to run left hand rotation but I advise you not to because it is

designed to run under heavy load in the other direction. You could have premature gear or bearing failure. If they made there drives to to used both directions, they would not specify

left and right hand rotation.I hope this helps and this is only my

opinion.I am sure there are many people who do not agree with me and that is there opinion.Good luck.

  2. One of the great things about Volvo, they can be both right hand and left hand.  It's the gear shift that moves the cone clutch.   You haven't said, which drive you received, but check with the service department and you can switch directions if you need to, like so you can use your spare prop.  Good luck!!.............edited 7/25 Wm. M is addressing 200 series drives like the 270-280-290.  And is correct.  Mr.fixit is correct that the shift change can be made at the shift box, but he's incorrect that the gearing is designed to run right hand.  It maybe what he's been told, but the two gears are the same.    Check ://www.volvo.com/volvopenta/global/en-gb...

  3. There is a cover on the back of the stern drive(up high) The bottom s***w is just that but long the top one is half a wing nut. Loosen the top one and remove the bottom one and there you will find a cross bar coming out of the lower unit. It will have a link rod on one side or the other. Remove the two pins that hold the rod on and switch sides.  Use new cotter pins, Hook the half wing nut to the case and fish around for the long bolt threaded hole and tighten them up snug, but not real tight. just enough so the cover will not wiggle.
