I have a water softener, the tank is filled solid with salt pellets, shouldn't it nave only a few inches?

Why is it packed solid with pellets?

  1. You can fill it all the way to the top.

    It is just a storage for unused salt.

    Peek down inside the tube that is inside and you

    should see about 6-10 inches of Brine (Salt Water)in the bottom. As long as the unit is slowly consuming the salt as it regenerates, it is probably working fine.


  2. I would think that the amount of salt in your softener unit would be a function of what kind of unit you have, how much water you use, the capacity of your tank, etc..

    Have you read the Owner's Manual? Have you tried to find an Owner's Manual online? What about checking out the softener manufacturer's web site or FAQ page or even calling the manufacturer?
