I have a white melamine bookcase that i want to piant what is the best way to do this?

can i just buy a paint from bunnnings and paint straight over the top of it?

If you just paint, it will peel off.  The best thing to do is to sand the book case lightly, apply a good primer and then paint.  Check out your local hardware store, they may even carry a spray paint specifically for melamine.  People have done this before, it can be done.
