I have a whole bunch of mini movies of clips from TV, friends and all that, and they are mostly on .AVI format, how can I put them on a DVD usable by a TV DVD player?

If they are on your computer, get a program that can burn them to DVD, Assuming you have a DVD-RW you can use Nero 7. It works great.
