I have a window a/c. i think the thermostat is bad. i have some old a/c's. will any or most thermostats work?

need to know if a thermostat from another a/c will work with mine. will the same brand but different model work? they will both be a 110v. i can get a new one for about $60. but im not sure that this is even the prob. i held my fingers around the thermostat to warm it up and the compressor came on so i think this is what it is. hope someone can help. thanks, robert
