I get usually around 13-20 kBps download speeds from anywhere, so I'm pretty sure it's my end...I just want to know what the cause might be and what I can do, because when I have to download a lot of files one at a time, it becomes really tedious.

thanks in advance.

  1. So easy to pick the problem

First of all, turn off ur wireless and connect ur computer directly to the internet cable.

If the download still the same then the problem is not from your computer but from the broadband. If u notice any change in the download, then the problem is from the wireless.

Personally, 95% the problem is not from ur computer but from the Internet service provider, so I'd recommend you to contact him and explain him the problem.

    Hope it helps.

  2. A lot depends on what operating system your running.

But it sound like your bandwidth is restricted, Or it could be other programs restricting your bandwidth,

Whilst downloading try closing different programs briefly,

Like your firewall or the antivirus program. If you still have no luck try to find out your physical internet connection ie:- fibre optic or copper wire, If you still have no luck serch for a site call tweak XP (if your running XP) and look for bandwidth restriction fixes. Best of luck

This is the link for tweak XP

  3. Maybe exiting some programs that use the internet. I suggest, if you use Firefox, closing the browser window and leaving just the Downloads window open. Also, close applications like Skype and MSN Messenger.

  4. Hi,

54 Mbps is the maximum speed what your wireless card can achieve. Part of this is allocated for maintenance communication between your laptop and the router. So what is remaining, normally 25M Mbps is what you can have for downloads but unfortunately this is not always the case. A more practical range is what already mentioned by you.

In order to have better speed, use a LAN cable connection. This way you have no air/object interference between your laptop and the router. If this option is unavailable, then stay as near as possible to the router, the speed is probably the fastest you can get.

  5. SPEED IS NOT THE SAME WITH DOWNLOAD SPEED. MY WIRELESS CONNECTION IS ALSO 54MBPS BUT MY INTERNET CONNECTION IS ONLY 386KBPS. SO THE DOWNLOAD RATE IS ONLY 30 TO 45 KBPS. DOWNLOAD SPEED IS ALSO TRAFFIC DEPENDENT. IF THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE DOWLOADING THE FILE FROM THE SAME LINK THEN YOURS WILL BE SLOWER. AND ALSO THE LOCATION OF THE SERVER CONTAINING THE FILE,
