The finish is 23 years old and very dull. I've tried many waxes and polishes and nothing works well. Formica is a plastic. I was wondering if I can put polyurathane on it? Joe

  1. You would need firstly to give the surface a light sanding with a fine grade sandpaper, clean it & ensure it is dry then give a very light coating of the polyurathane.  The sanding marks may show through.

You can now purchase Formica Paint that will rejuvenate laminate surfaces that dries to a hard wearing satin finish.

  2. This is a total guess, I don't know but...I would think it would chip off over time and look worse. Then again they use it on floors and we walk on those! I just wonder about it bonding to the slick surface of the counter properly. Have you tried Gary Sullivan's website? This guy seems to know a lot about finishes, paints, etc.

  3. The big problem is adhering to the laminate surface Nothing that I know of will do (trust me I've been in the furniture/building industry a long time), whatever you put on will eventually peel off .

I have to agree with Dorton Girl floor wax is the best solution

    Good luck whatever you do

  4. do the light cote first

  5. OOPS........I would say no.....It will eventually bubble up and some would wear of and you will end uop with it in worse shape,,,,,,,try Johnsons Floor Wax.....In the paste...

  6. Yup.  Do a lite coat first.  You don't really need it thick.
