Question:

I have a yellow algae problem in my swimming pool.?

I followed the suggestions of the pool store by adjusting the alkalinity and pH and adding an copper-based algecide. After a couple of days the yellow deposit went away, but the pool is now very cloudy (like a colloidal suspension), which is not improving. I am using a new zeobrite/zeolite filter, which I think might not be taking the fine /suspension particles out of the water. I did some research on zeolite filters and evidently it is not as good as a DE filter, which I previously had. In addition, I found out that natural zeolite takes out transition metals like copper, iron and manganse. As the Banish (BioGuard) algecide contains about 3% copper, I'm wondering how it can work on the the algae if the filter material is removing it. Anybody had a similar experience with these new zeolite/zeobrite filters?

  1. even if the filter takes out the copper, the water and algae will still flow over filter and therefore copper...try using a water clarifier (those blue gel blocks work great with sand filters) and run filter 24 hours a day for a few days

  2. Zeolite is the second best filter systems next to cartridge. Zeolite is finer than regular sand filters so it filters smaller particles. But DE is a little better Zeolite.

If you pool is cloudy you want to add a coagulant like a clarifier or flock. It clumps all the particles (which is the dead algae you just killed) together. Let your filter run for 4 to 6 hours, turn it off over night and vacuum it out to waste. This should get rid of it! It may take a couple tries to get it clear. But it will work!!
