I have zoom 381 endura mountain bike. Is the handle bar height adjustable? Doesn't seem so. The owners manual is written in Hungarian with no illustrations so it's not much help.

  1. It depends on the stem that your bike has.

If you have an older style "quill" stem, then you can probably adjust the height a little bit.  These are old-school, but are still often found on cheaper bikes.  If the front of the stem doesn't have a removeable faceplate that clamps the handlebars, then you probably have a quill stem.  They go into the fork steerer tube and clamp in place with an internal wedge.   To adjust them, you loosen the bolt at the bend in the stem and raise or lower it to where you want it.  Pay attention, because there is a "minimum insertion" mark near the bottom of the stem.....make sure that mark isn't exposed.   You can set the stem height anywhere above that mark.

If you have a more modern stem, it will clamp around the fork tube rather than inside of it.   These stems usually have 2 bolts to the rear edge that tighten around the tube, and on the front they'll have 2 or 4 bolts that clamp the handlebar.   With this style, you're limited by the length of the fork tube.   You may see some spacers below the stem or above it....if you have those, then you can adjust your stem a little.   If not, then the only way to change your handlebar height is to buy a fork with a longer (or uncut) steerer tube, or to use a different handlebar with a different height/bend to it.

Hope this helps you out some.....if you need more  help post back here.   Also, you can check out the "repair help" section at http://www.parktool.com for pretty good instructions and photos of both systems.   Good luck!   :o)

  2. I think that you mean either the fork says Zoom or the stem does. That is not the name of the bike.

Anyway, RideUrban does a good job explaining...

  3. I suppose this is a bike you have bought on-line!!!

In addition to Ride!urban, above, you can also buy a stem extender for both types, this will increse the height by about 2 to 3", you will need to know the stem diameter.
