She was not born into a Royal family, nor does she marry a Prince?

  1. I think Disney's ideas of princesses are girls with attitude. They all do something great, so that qualifies them. Good question! Hope I helped! :)

  2. It's just what Disney calls their stable of female lead charactars, because most of them are in fact princesses.

  3. The same reason Tinkerbell is rolled into that mix as well.

I find it totally confusing, yet we ignore Eilowyn (Black cauldron) and Kida (Atlantis) who ARE princesses.

I guess the key word is...marketability

  4. Well, Walt Disney was a racist.  That image of the Disney company has been cleared up over the years (lots of people didn't even know that.)  I believe that Jasmin was the first Disney Princess of color.  Disney wanted to add some color to the mix....and that's why I think they put Mulan in there too.  Maybe they wanted young girls of color to feel like they could be a princess too.  And they could be, even if they weren't white!!!!  It's just that as the world grew more accepting and tolerant, I think Disney decided that adding some different races would be appropriate.  I dunno....Mulan isn't a princess, but I think it was her character and personality that got her to be one of the Disney Princesses....appealing to young girls and saying that you can be beautiful AND tough at the same time.

    And I like Mulan  :)

  5. "I am a princess. All girls are. Even if they live in tiny old attics. Even if they dress in rags, even if they aren't pretty, or smart, or young. They're still princesses. All of us. "      ~ Sara Crewe

    Haha! Just kidding...

Well...I don't know what else it could be...Most of the other major Disney heroines are actual princesses, so it's a pretty logical way to group them all. Leaving Mulan out of the mix would probably seem a little harsh (and maybe even kind of racist...hahaha! =P). Once she's in the same league as all of the other famous Disney females, she becomes more of an icon too...

  6. Excellent point. She's more of a heroine than a princess. I guess Disney labelled her as a princess to sell Mulan merchandise to little girls? Because most little girls love princesses.
