Question:

I have an 'indefinite leave to remain in UK' would I require a visa to visit the Republic of Ireland?

Actually, not me but someone very close to me, would the person require a visa to visit:

1. Republic of Ireland

2. France

3. Actually, any EU country

4. US

5.Canada

6. Australia

I have checked the websites of these countries but not satisfied with the information given. The person has a NIGERIAN passport and would like to vist these countries. I am assuming that the same visa requirements wouldn't apply to him as a person who is applying freshly from Nigeria, since this person could be just one year away from a full British passport.

Any advice would do.

Thank you

  1. Best thing to do is check directly with the embassies of the countries this person wishes to visit as they are not yet holders of a British passport different rules will likely apply and may well be different for each country.

  2. as far as i know visiting european countries and requiring visa's depend on which country that person is from. going to the US, you would definately need a visa, even british people need to now, unless you got some chip installed in your passport like 4 years ago, its all the anti-terrorism security measures.

i think the thing is that the indefinite leave just allows you to stay in the UK for as long as you want, but it is nowhere a substitute for a British passport. as far as i know that person still holds a Nigerian passport not a British one. although i may be completely wrong. it would be better to call each embassy to find out

  3. The R 0f Ireland does not require a visa if you are travelling from the UK and have the stamp in your passport. My advice would be to get citizenship asap so preempt further problems.

Travelling on a Nigerian passport will not get you into the USA without a lot of hassle as unfortunately this country, Nigeria, has gotten itself a lot of bad publicity due to false passports, scams etc. I would say the same of Oz as it is very strict at letting in people with full citizenship. I think that if your friend has a stated abode while in the country and a definite flight home it should be less of a problem. Good luck anyway.

  4. Yes, you are right.  A person with ILR for the UK cannot travel to those countries without the necessary visa as if they are travelling from their home country.  On the other hand, if they are a British citizen then they will have the same right that all British citizens have to travel, live and work in any EEA country without a visa.  Even a British citizen, as well as those on ILR, must obtain a visa to settle in USA, Canada or Australia or to travel there for any other purpose aside from a holiday.

  5. ireland france and any e,u countrie are fine to visit without visa you just need a valid passport, all the other places require visas if you wana work but if your just visiting a holiday visa will do which is very easy to obtain..
