Now it only came with 40gb, and i've searched and searched for a compatible HDD over 100gb with no luck. I'm not very computer savvy so I was wondering if someone could help me finding a compatible HDD that I could buy that would be oer 100gb if my notebook could handle it.

  1. RPM is Revolutions Per Minute.  If it's spinning faster it can read/write the information faster but generates more heat and (usually) uses more power.

SATA is Serial ATA (a newer type of connection) and ATA is Parallel ATA - also called PATA or ATA-IDE (older type of connection)

You need to make sure the connection type (interface type) is compatible - whether it's SATA or ATA.

I can't find specs on which the Acer Travelmate 2400 uses so I suggest taking it to a computer shop...also, since you're not familiar with the types of drive connections and many companies use special adapters, I assume you wouldn't be able to identify what you need by looking at it and it's easy to break a pin off and ruin the whole thing if you do it wrong.

  2. Well, you can upgrade to a 100Gb 7200rpm drive, or up to a 250Gb 5400rpm drive.

Your laptop is not that old, it should support the higher capacity drives without a problem.

It is the pentium 2 and 3 laptops which have an issue addressing harddrives greater than 137Gb. It is an LTA error.

Just make sure that you get a PATA harddrive.

According to Acer's website, it supports 60Gb and larger ATA 100 harddrives

If you need to update the bios, here is the site to go to: (just select your model, and look through the pdf for the correct link for a bios upgrade)

Your laptop should have no problem recognizing a 250Gb harddrive
