I have Samantha, I got her in '86 if I remember right. At any rate, her hair is kind of icky. What would be the best way to recondition her hair? Or at least make it less straggly.

  1. If sending her in to the doll hospital is not an option you are looking for, there are things you can do to help get her hair back into nicer condition. American girl dolls have glued-on synthetic wigs, so when cleaning the hair, be sure not to saturate it too much with cleaners, water, or conditioners (although if it happens, wig can be re-glued once fully dry). Remember, less is more in this case!

Protect the dolls cloth body from moisture before you start! Make a plastic cape from a plastic bag and tape it securely around the dolls neck.

If the hair needs cleaning, many doll experts recommend cleaners such as windex or 409 spray (wet hair first, work a little spray cleaner gently through it, and rinse....be sure not to "scrub" which would make the hair more tangled.  They also have speacial cleaners for doll wigs, but most people use what they have on hand.

After rinsing the cleaner out, next you add a bit of conditioner. You can use hair conditioner, liquid fabric softener, childrens hair de-tanglers, or even a product called "Son of a Gun" which is a vinyl protectant. Use a wide-tooth comb or brush to work through the ahir....start at the bottom and work upwards if it is real tangled. Rinse gently and re-comb. A brush that has been used on human hair is not recommended because it retains human hair oils that can coat the hair and attract grime later on.

OK, once you are washed, rinsed, conditioned, brushed, rinsed, and re-combed, you are ready to style. You can set the hair in rollers if you would like some curl to it. If you want it straight, use an old clean nylon stocking or knee-high stocking to cover her hair and hold it in place as it dries (so it dries flat). It will take several days to thoroughly dry unless maybe you set her in the sun.

I hope these tips are helpful for you. If it turns out the wig is beyond help, another option is to re-wig the doll or have it done for you. American Girl does have the doll hospital available to you, but you can actually buy a doll wig of the right size/color/style and do it yourself to save money (which is another story for another day, but is easily managed even by people with no experience) Best of luck to you!

  2. I think you have to send her to American Girl  - You'll have to schedule an appointment for them to do her hair.

  3. well what you could do is go to a american girl doll store near by and ask if they can fix your dolls hair and even though you have to pay for it its still worth it to have done.

  4. I would try to get in touch with American Girl - call their 1-800 number and see what they say.  You will dmage the hair if you try to clean it yourself.  Not worth it since the doll is an expensive one.
