Question:

I have an HD program on my cable box DVR. I am trying to put it on a DVD recorder in SD in 4:3 format. Thanks.

I recently recorded a few hockey games that I wanted to keep on a DVD. Unfortunately I chose the HD channel instead of just recording the SD channel which usually records fine.

Now when I hook up the DVD recorded to the cable box through red-white-yellow cables I am able to record but the problem is that it is in extreme widescreen format so the picture only takes up about 1/2 of the screen.

Does anyone know how I could adjust the settings so my recording could fill the whole screen like a regular 4:3 DVD recording would. Thanks.

  1. Since it was recorded in HD quality this may be a very tough to convert without a PC. Recording to a PC and using video editing software you can easily convert from HD resolution to SD resolution and then record to a DVD but this takes time and requires a high-end TV Capture card.

I am not familiar with any non PC method to convert from HD to SD due to hardware limitations in DVR and DVD recorders.

  2. I can't be sure without knowing which cable box you have, but there is almost certainly an adjustment on the cable box which you can change temporarily from 16:9 to 4:3 while you dub the recording.
