  1. DO NOT PUT A MINIDVD IN A SLOT LOADIND OPTICAL DRIVE. You will break the drive and scratch the disc.

The BEST way to do what you want is to get an external firewire connected drawer loading optical drive (like those from LaCie) and connect it to your Mac...

    http://www.lacie.com/us/products/family....

and use the drawer loading drive with the miniDVD.

The other way to get the video from the camcorder to the computer is to use the AV cables that came with the camcorder and connect them to an Analog/Digital bridge from Canopus http://canopus.com/products/videoconvers... and connect using a firewire400 (IEEE1394a) cable to the firewire400 port on the back of the iMac.

WARNIBG: DVD based camcorders will provide you the worst available camcorder video. They compress too much - and the result of that compression is lost data... which translates into poor video quality.

MiniDV tape continues to provide best available video quality because DV and HDV do not compress very much.

Hard drive based camcorders are next in video quality - but the MPEG2 (and AVCHD) compression is still a lot more than DV and HDV (but not as much as DVD based camcorders into the VOB files).

This is a camcorder issue - not a computer issue. DVD camcorders should be recalled by the manufacturers and recycled - and the people who bought them should be refunded their money.

  2. try reformatting the disc
