  1. In order for you to transfer from Enlisted to Officer you must serve a certain amount of time.  Then put in your package and depending on your GPA and your degree they may or may not accept it.  It can also depend on the demand at the time and what you are looking into doing.

As for then starting as O4, no you do not, just because you are E4 does not mean it automatically become O4.  You would actually start again but it would O1E, Officer, prior enlisted.  With this comes a higher pay instead of getting O1 Pay, you are getting O1E pay.

  2. That's weird.  I hope you are joining the air force cause I have no idea what those people think or are like.  I suppose that mindset might be something an Army service member might get away with initially, but I would hope that it would be batted down quickly.  If you join the Zimbabwean Army you will automatically be given the rank of O10.  That's impressive.

  3. Negative, you will enlist and be a E-3 NOT E-4. Slap your recruiter if he is telling you that. If you go for an officer commision you will enter as an O-1.

  4. In the Navy, the only way a person (with or without a degree) can be automatically promoted to E-4 is as a musician.  Navy musicians have to have a degree in music in order to get that rate.  For all other sailors, the highest pay grade one can enter in the Navy at is E-3.

All E-4s (petty officer third class) in the Navy have to have a rate; you can only earn a rate by either finishing A school or completing the course requirements.  As you have yet to do either, you can enter the Navy as an E-4.

As for officers, all commissioned officers in the American military have college degrees.  Therefore, you would enter the military at the commissioning rank of O-1.

    >Sorry, "gijoey" but you can not enter the Navy as an E-4, no matter your college degree.  You have to earn a rate first; there are no non-rate petty officers in the Navy.  What kind of frakkin' officer calls an NCO a r****d without knowing first what he is talking about?

  5. If you are talking about Army then yes with a degree you can go in as a E-4. If you get accepted into OCS(officer candidate school) then upon graduation you will be commissioned with O-1( second LT.) O-4 is a Major and that you have to earn. I would personally suggest going the officer route. I speak from experience and you will be much happier if you want to make a career.

  6. you will not enter in to the military as an officer in the rank of o-4. you will enter as an o-1 and work your way up. what branch are you talking about? they are all different. i know for the air force the highest you could enlist as would be e-3, unless you have prior service, which doesn't sound like you do.

  7. If you enlist, you may qualify for accelerated advancement to E-4, but it won't be immediate.  You will have to do your time in grade.  They may let you start as E-3 or E-2.  Even with this in your contract, advancement will be at your CO's discretion.

If you become an officer, they will send you through training and upon completion they will make you an O-1,  all Commisioned Officers have degrees, yours is nothing special.

  8. We call an E4 that got it by coming in with college and "shake and bake" petty officer.

To become an O4 you will have to do it the old fashion way and work your way up...about 10 years.

  9. If you finished your degree, and now want to serve your country by enlisting, you have earned E-4 (at least for the Army).

I'm not sure how I feel about civilians coming in off the street, and going  straight to Officer Candidate School (OCS), but if you do that, you will be a Second Lieutenant (O-1).

The only way you can enter the service as an O-4 is as a Surgeon, with years of experience.

As you look into this, remember that if you enlist, you get to pick you job; if you go OCS, you only get to express your preference.

  10. if you have your bachelors degree, you can enlist and be an E-4 (a Specialist, usually takes 2-3 years to get if you progress normally), if you want to be an officer you will come in as an O-1 (2nd Lieutenant), unless you have a specialty such as an attorney, a doctor/nurse, then it could be anywhere from O-3 (Captain) to O-4 (Major), maybe even a Lieutenant Colonel (I know of one of the doctors at the hospital that got that, he said its rare though)

  11. nope.  all Officers are O1s unless you are a Doctor, Nurse or Lawyer with experience.. in which case you can go in at O2 or O3.

the ARMY alone offers E4 to  personnel with a degree..and not every MOS qualifies.

the Marines give a max of E2 no matter how many letters you have after your name and the AF,CG and Navy offer up to E3 witha degree.

  12. In the Air Force - there is no way, unless you have prior service, to enter as an E-4.  E-3 would be the highest.

    In the Army-

As per Army Regulation 601–210   (the recruiters guide)

2–18. Enlistment pay grades for personnel without prior service

    (8) Has successfully completed 2 or more academic years of a postsecondary vocational-technical school and has received a certificate of training attesting to successful completion of the course may enlist at any time at pay grade PFC (E-3)

The school must be listed in the AIPE (see para 2–20).

    (9) Has successfully completed a degree-producing college program of 4 years duration and the college or university is listed in the AIPE and has been awarded a bachelor degree or higher (foreign degrees and transcripts must be evaluated according to para 2–7f) may enlist at any time at pay grade specialist (SPC - E-4).

(In most cases - but not all)

If you apply and are selected as an Officer - Generally you start as an O-1 with automatic promotion to O-2 at 2 years. Then after 2 more years, automatic promotion to O-3.  After that, no promotion is guaranteed but you would be looking at least 4 years in the grade of O-4.

If you enter as a Dentist or Physican - then you are granted the starting at the rank of O-3 (Captain) automatically.  Nurses and most of the Allied Health professionals will start out at  O-1 (2nd Lt) unless there is a special provision for additional advancement.

Unless they have changed things drasticly, this is pretty much the way it is.

    What is your degree in?

  13. How in gods name do you get E 4 because you have attended some classes in a college? If that is true then that branch is a complete joke..

And h**l no you dont get O4, how about you earn your rank and stop looking for a shortcut..You will feel better if you earn it.

  14. The guy above my post is a r****d. But here is your answer.....

If you enlist with a Bachelors you will be put in as an E-4. If you go in with an officer option you will still enlist as an E-4, however once you have completed your officer training you will become an O-1. O-4 is an extremely high rank and is not for entry level people. Even if you want to be an officer and get it guarenteed in your enlistment contract you will start out as an E-4.
